Basic Weaving Terminology
Term | Definition |

Warp | The vertical threads that are held under tension on the loom. |
Weft | The horizontal threads that are woven through the warp. |
Shed | The space created when the warp threads are separated, allowing the weft to pass through. |
Heddle | A device on a loom that separates the warp threads to create a shed. |
Tapestry Needle | A large, blunt needle used to weave the weft threads. |
Weaving Techniques
Technique | Description |

Tabby Weave | A simple over-one, under-one pattern. |
Soumak | A technique that creates a raised, textured line. |
Rya Knots | Knots that create a pile or fringe. |
Dovetailing | A method for joining two colours along a vertical line. |
The Tapestry Weaving Process
